Machines, tools and furnitures estimated at over #50 million were
burnt to ashes as early night fire razes timber and carpenters sheds
otherwise known as Ukwu Ogbu Carpenters Shed, located at number 9
Oraogbu Street. Umudioka, Awka Anambra State.
Eye witness said the fire was noticed around 9 pm Tuesday night, when
the workers and shop owners had already gone home and later the state
fire service men arrived but could not put off the 'blazing fire', as
a result of water shortage.
"Therefore the blazing fire burnt down everything within the
premises" he said.
When our correspondent got to the seen around 9am this morning, one of
the fire victims Azubike Eze lamented that their loses was colossal,
running into several millions of naira, as some of the shop owners
looked in consternation.
According to Eze, how do you qualify the losses - several machines
employed by carpenters, working tools to execute their job, household
furniture's being contracts awarded to some of them, office furniture
chairs and tables are all burnt down by the fire.
Eze said others resources also razed down by the fire included leather
materials (MBF), school furniture, plants for doing different jobs,
ply wood etc, adding that their shed were totally razed.
There were many versions as to the cause of the fire accident, but
three major opinions pointed accusing fingers to a neighbor's compound
where bonfire was smoldering around 6pm barely 3 hours before the fire
incident.

A victim who would not want his name mentioned said one of them
quickly rush to that yard to complain, and they actually stopped the
burning of whatever but quickly added that unnoticed things of fire
might have penetrated and spread to sawdust and other wooden wastes
nearby.
"This then developed, spread unnoticed and burnt down their shed," our
source said.
However, another version linked the fire outbreak to electrical fault
or un-switched off working machine which ignited due to power surge.

As at the time of filing this report, some sympathizers and relatives
of the fire victims were seen gathering in group's discussing the fire
incident, while many of those affected lamented their loses.
It was gathered that the sheds were burnt down totally while trace of
pulled down building materials were all scattered within the vicinity.
Member-Elect, Anambra State House of Assembly for
Akwa South State constituency, Hon Nnamdi Okafor while inspecting the burnt
down environs, lamented the unfortunate incident and promised to make case for
the victims involved as he sympathized with them.
