It is over 40 years since the Nigeria civil war but till date some victims of the war are still suffering as a result of injures and wounds sustained during battle. These groups of soldiers who fought during the war for the emancipation of the Igbo race are abandoned in a camp somewhere in Orji River, Enugu state. Fortunately for them a group of great academia, under the aegis of Unique Fellows All Nation (UFAN) has decided to lend a hand of friendship and help to them.
The plan to visit the Biafran war veterans at their camp was made known to newsmen by the 5th Mayor of the club, Prof Tony Nwokoye after he was installed the new mayor of the club at Suncity hotel, Awka. He noted that Biafran soldiers who became handicapped as a result of the injuries sustained during the war where all abandoned and neglected in a camp as he called on the south east governors to immediately come to the aid of the soldiers.
His words "The Biafran soldiers who fought for our freedom especially those who lost their hands and legs are all suffering at their various camps in Oji River and Okigwe respectively, this is because the people they risked their lives for have forgotten about them. Some of them are spending the rest of their lives in that camp, which is why we at unique fellows club will pay them a visit for them to feel valued and loved.
He called on the government to help in rebuilding the dilapidated structures that house these veteran soldiers in their various camps to make life a lot more comfortable for them.
"If you see the where this people are living you will cry for them. There is no door or window and the roofs are completely leaking, they environment is unkempt and not habitable." He stressed
The new mayor also disclosed that the club will visit some motherless babies home and as well provide scholarship to some of the orphans. He explained that unique fellows club was aimed at reducing the plight of the common people living in the society.
"This club has planned to take further steps to make its services available to more needy people, scholarship to those that cannot afford the cost of education, taking up hospital bills for those that have great and serious family challenges and to get close to more orphanage homes." He expounded.
The high point of the occasion was the investiture of unique stallion fellows to Engr Innocent Akuvue the President General of Nibo Union, Prof Okey Luke Anike, Vice chancellor Enugu State University of Science and Technology, and Arc Sam K.O Mbaduike
