The Anambra state governor , Willie Obiano, has raised the alarm
over the possibilty of a flood disaster in the state this year.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Awka , the state capital
, on Wednesday by the state commissioner for Information, Culture
and Tourism, Dr Uju Nwogu, the governor urged those living in riverine
areas of the state to be watchful to avoid loss of lives and damage
to property.
In 2012 Anambra communities of Ayamelum , Anambra-east ,
Anambra-west ,Ogbaru , Awka-North and some other areas suffered the
misfortune of being submerged by flood occasioned by persistent
torrential rainfall
According to Obiano in the press release on Wednesday, the Nigerian
Meteorological Agency had predicted that Anambra State would
experience excessive flooding between the months of September and
October this year particularly in the riverine communities of the
state.
The Governor said in anticipation of the flood, the State Government
had embarked on the preparation of camps in different locations of the
state to accommodate those who would likely to be affected by the
flood.
He stressed the need for residents of the state to begin to take
proactive measures to stem the tide of flooding or where necessary
relocate to the upland to avoid being caught unawares .
The governor tasked the media to help sensitize the public on the
impending disaster, describing information as key in circumstances
such as the one in question.
