The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Anambra has commenced the evacuation of broken down and abandoned vehicles on major roads.
Sector Commander, Mr SundayAjayi, said on Monday that it was the new phase of its operations to ensure disruption-free driving.
Ajayi said the command was disturbed by the number of abandoned vehicles which dotted the highways and had at different times contributed to road traffic crashes.
"This is a holistic approach to keeping the roads in the state safe; we want to make the roads free from any form of obstruction.
"We don't want to encourage people to abandon their vehicles on the road and if members of the public see vehicles that are parkedfor a long time on the roads, they can inform the FRSC to remove them.
"The operations will last as long as it takes us to clear the ways," he said.
The sector commander said that the roads were not motor parks where people should leave their vehicles for a long time and called on motorists whose vehicles broke down on the roads to remove them as soon as possible.Ajayi said the evacuation would becontinuous and advised their owners to check at the FRSC offices.
He expressed the inability of the commission to trace such vehicles with their original owners because they were not auto-registered and urged motorists to embrace AUTOREG intheir own interests.
A motorist, Mr Kenneth Nwakwo, commend the FRSC for embarkingon the exercise as abandoned vehicles were becoming common place on the roads.
Nwakwo said such obstructions were dangerous and caused accidents and urged the FRSC to continue with the exercise to achieve full compliance to road traffic rules.
