ANAMBRA STATE GOVT OFFICIALS MURDERS DRIVER IN ONITSHA
About 10 officials of the Anambra State Ministry of Transport Thursday
beat a man to death in Onitsha over arguments on the purchase of
vehicle emblem.
The man who was identified as Okechukwu Onwuamaegbu was said to be a
driver attached to Pentecostal Church, Chosen, in Onitsha.
Eye witnesses said trouble began when the victim was driving along the
Enugu-Onitsha expressway and approached the upper Iweka area of the
road and was flagged down by the Adhoc staff of the ministry and
demanded to see his vehicle emblem.
The driver, it was learnt, alighted from his vehicle and engaged them
in an argument which prompted the over 20 staff otherwise called the
government 'agbero' to descend on him, beating him to a pulp.
The driver, it was also learnt, collapsed in the process in the pool
of his own blood as the ministry officials drove away in his vehicle
to their office at the water front area of Onitsha.
Individuals who witnessed the event, it was learnt, took the man to
the nearby Toronto hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Onitsha Central Police station,
Mr. Isa Abubakar, who confirmed the incident, said two arrests had
been made already and that the case had been transferred to the state
intelligence and investigative bureau for further action.
